It’s Battle of the Books Friday! Today’s book, The 13th Floor by Sid Fleischman, is on the 2010-2011 Pikes Peak Region Battle of the Books list.
After the death of their parents Buddy Stebbins and sister Liz find themselves struggling to pay the bills. They might have to sell the house. They’ve already sold many of the furnishings. Just as things in the present continue to get difficult, Buddy and Liz receive a strange message from a long lost relative, Abigail Parsons. Then Liz disappears. Things really heat up when Buddy, in search of Liz, stumbles on the thirteenth floor of an old building. Only it’s not really a floor. It’s a time portal and Buddy is transported three hundred years into the past. He finds himself onboard a leaking pirate ship during a raging storm. Cast adrift with the Captain John Crackstone (also known as John Stebbins – an ancestor of Buddy’s), Buddy washes up in New England where he finds his sister Liz, working to assist Abigail who has been accused of witchcraft. This is a humorous adventure filled with witches, high seas adventure, pirates, and treasure. Buddy is glad to meet his ancestors, but wants to go home soon. But to do that he must save Abigail, Captain Crackstone and find the 13th Floor.
